Are They Really Reading?: Expanding Ssr in the Middle Grades
Published in Paperback by Stenhouse Pub (April, 2002)
Authors: Jodi Crum Marshall and Janet Allen

This stuff WORKS!
I purchased this book a couple of months ago and immediately put it to use in my 8th grade Language Arts classroom. The change in attitude for both my students and myself was AMAZING. Students who "pretended" to read before suddenly began actually reading "for real". As a result, their vocabularies improved, test scores went up, and some of them developed a passion for reading (and writing) which wasn't there before. Not only did my students begin enjoying books, I enjoyed teaching from these same books.

One important tip: Always, always, always read the books you assign your kids ahead of time. Read them not just for content for "the test", but find books that are funny and relevant to THEM.

I can't say enough about this book. Buy it, use it, and savor every magic moment when your kids finally enjoy reading!

The Argonautica
Published in Hardcover by (December, 1989)
Authors: Apollonius Rhodius, Apollonius, and Marshall M. Gillies
Average review score:

Jason and the ship of dreams
I read this story in Greek Mythology in university. Jason is some kind of wise man. His father was a doctor. The Argonauts are a band of wise men, doctors, shamans, augurers, omen-readers, and shape-changers. The Argo is a ship of dreams. The name Jason has become very popular. I often ask fellows named Jason if they know where their own name comes from, and usually they do not. Everyone named Jason should read the Argonautica. Anyone who knows a Jason should give him a copy for a gift.

The Astrologer's Daughter (Legacy of Love)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin Mills & Boon Ltd (09 December, 1994)
Author: Paula Marshall
Average review score:

Romance set in London 1665
If you read Regency Romances then this book might be of interest. It gives historical background to the way life was in 1665 and from it you can see how life developed into the regency time period. It happens to include both the plague and the great fire of London. An English author, I happen to like the way all women are still referred to as Mistress. Also you, your, thee, thou and thy are treated interchangably at this time period. An interesting book in its own right, interesting and accurate use of language and a well researched history lesson in its own way.

If you like this autor try Alice Chetwynd Ley as well.

This book has not only outstanding photography of many locations throughout the world which are known for romance, history, and culture but also very good historical background information. It accomplishes all of this without being a history book. It is travel and the pleasure of exploring new worlds all at your fingertips! Enjoy it

Attending Marvels

Review of "Attending Marvels: A Patagonian Journal"
A quick summary of this book would describe it as a fossil hunter's journal from the 1930s. However, humorous, matter-of-fact descriptions of people, politics and the unexpected make this book an excellent choice for any reader.

Excellent photo record of B-29 operations in WW2
I am currently helping to restore a B-29 pictured in Mr. Marshalls book. He shows us photos never before seen. I am tired of seeing the same old photographs in books about the B-29. It is a treat to see new material and a lot of it in color. Anyone knowing Mr. Marshalls address, please forward same to me at: L. Sutherland 35920 22nd pl. so. "A". Federal Way, WA 98003. We'd like to get a copy of his photo of the Museums B-29 for our files.
